Fatal Radiance - Chapter 14

Description

Oh boy, this chapter is pretty light-hearted and pretty brutal at the same time. I guess, with the chapters that followed Aldric and the more adult characters I was more daring to have violence than with Khaba and Co. So far, I have explored quite a lot of themes with all of this. Of course, there are things I think I may have to explain.

Munt: Comparable to a Vogt. For anyone, who played Skyrim, this should make sense as they know those as the guys selling you houses. And in fact, they are like the officials of Norse nobility and deal with formal matters. Vigdis of course also packs some heat, because she also is quite good at fighting and acting as a military figure. Her husband Ingi is a huscarl of Vidar's family (and the only one at the moment), so basically a personal bodyguard, but also the one in charge of the warriors of Jokulldal who also serve Vidar's family.

Naströnd: A place within Helheimr, the Underworld of Norse mythology. It is reserved for those, who have commited dire crimes and thus it is like Tartaros a place of punishment. The rest of Helheimr is quite acceptable after what I know, but of course not as nice as Valhalla.

Orobas: A demon from the Ars Goetia, appearing as a horse but changing to a man at command of the summoner. In this case I call him daemon instead of demon, because the role of those beings mostly are less malovent for the beastmen in this universe. Orobas is a being that can grant the favor of friend and foe alike to the summoner, as well as someone, who will tell you the secrets of the physical and metaphysical, should you so desire. What makes him stand out is that he is loyal and honest to the summoner and even wards off other spirits, hence he made sense to be summoned by Aldric. Another note, if you kept track of what Danica, the devil in this universe, had mentioned in her appearances, then you might have an idea of what happened at some point in the past.

The Necklace Vidar gave Leofwine: There is no tradition of giving rings in this universe, yet. It mirrors our world in a lot of ways, and rings were not mandatory until much later actually. The necklace is more something Vidar did out of his own volition to propose to his beloved otter.

Yishai's talk: Well, now you know what magic is. I hope.

Update 03/03/16: Cut a scene and expanded a bit on Vidar's intentions on proposing for Leofwine after some feedback from SoFurry.

Awwww. That VidarxLeofwine scene! It's reminiscent of Bioware games where the player has one final romance scene just before the final battle, even though this wasn't really the final battle. XD

However, I'm a bit confused on how Aldric was able to summon a spirit to demoralize the enemy troops. That spirit must be very powerful to be able to influence the minds of an army.

Also, smartstripes. I like it. XD
