Fatal Radiance-Chapter 3

Description

Alright, I finally managed to finish the third chapter of Fatal Radiance and this time around... things may start to become a bit clearer or complicated, depending on how you look at it. And finally I have come to the point where I can introduce a few of the things that will later on become very important. And maybe some of you notice that Vidar uses a few words that are a bit odd maybe to some people. I researched norse insults and will list them later on.
Another thing is that I now incorporated Leofwine's siblings a bit more. Since they are technically almost adults, I found it was more fun to have them disobey their older brother and do what they want. Eventually Leofwine does stop with this nonsense later on of course.
Aldric meanwhile... well, he shows his nice and his fierce sides here. Nice towards the non-annoying characters and losing his patience with Leofwine and Vidar a little bit.

A few terms to explain:

Annwn:
Celtic place located in the Otherworld, a place of eternal joy and youth without hunger and suffering.

Helheimr:
In Norse mythology the World of the Dead, ruled by Hel, the daughter of Loki. Though later it was often associated with the Christian belief of Hell, it is more like the Greek underworld of Hades, which initially is not a place of suffering, except for a specific part reserved for those who are actually deserving punishment. This is rather evident in the Death of Baldr, who was welcomed into Hel with a banquet being prepared.

Mixing Wine:
Noadays you can drink wine just as it comes out of the bottle, but back in the Roman Empire wine was much stronger than it is today. Thus wine was mixed with water to be drinkable at all. A strong wine-drink would consist of 2 parts wine and three parts water after what I could find out, meaning Vidar's physical reaction was in fact the result of an almost lethal dose of alcohol. As a result he collapsed, had difficulties breathing, and... well, it is going to be unpleasant to clean that up.

Symposium and Hetairai:
A rather popular event in Roman and Greek culture. Men would be drinking while women called hetairai would be managing the entertainment of the evening. Now, for everyone who knows a bit about those two cultures, that basically means a lot of very, very sanguine pleasures. While the hetairai would play instruments and dance, they were also there for the pleasure of the men. And depictions of those events also show men that got so drunk they had to vomit. Amongst other things.

Vidar's Curses translated:
Bqllrhqfdi literally means Dickhead.
Bacraut means Asshole. (yeah, it's not a fine language)
Raven Starver is an insult for a coward.

Poor Leofwine. Nothing seems to go his way. XD

Sorry for the late comment. These long chapters take a while for me to read. ^^; The plot is really thickening. I really liked the exploration of the Old One's temple. I'm calling it right now. Those "fountains" they found were sinks in an ancient bathroom. XD
