Description

So, after working for a few months on this one, I am finally done. Finally did I manage to bring this story to paper. I rewrote the entire concept three, four times over the course of those months and frankly, I think it really was worth the effort. it took my a while to make a preview image, as using PDF requires that unfortunately, but thanks to some effort and help it went quite well.

I want to thank :icondanogambler: for inspiring me to write something about the character that was originally intended as a new avatar for me. Thanks to him he became more than that as he gave me an idea of writting a story about him. I hope it is okay that I used an altered version of the image to create this title.

The Titlefont comes from: www.webestools.com/web20-title…

So, what about this story?

It is not the first attempt of mine to write furry stories, far from it. But this is perhaps the one I put most effort into and also the best approach thus far. And I had quite a lot of fun to work on it to be honest. It evolved very well and I think I am now ready for putting it on.

The Setting is comparable to Middle-Europe during the La Téne era or Rome during the very early Imperial Period.

Now, the following text is basically Trivia, so I recommend reading the story first.

The character Aldric is a shaman as you might have read. Shamanism is the art to bring one's senses into a state capable to communicate with spirits, as Aldric did a few times. Usually this would actually require the use of herbs that cause effects on the psyche, but in this case I boiled it down a little bit because I can't really afford a badger high on something. His personality is kind of nice... till you either cross him or insult him, in which case... well, his staff is useful as you can see.
The Name "Aldric" is Old French-German and means "Old Ruler". Scathsolas is a mix of two word that result in a Dark and Light combination. I forgot the actual translation however.

Leofwine the otter is basically... not very violent. As seen in his reactions to several occassions where Death was involved. I do hope that I didn't went to far with making him throw up, but he is kind of a weak on his stomach. He steals, scavanges and fishes, but hurting another person (what is considered a person in this universe I mean) is something that he would probably not do unless he was pushed to the edge.
"Leofwine" is an old English name which means "Dear Friend". His home of "Bijulac" got it's name by combining the French words for Jewel and Lake.

Vidar was originally going to be more quiet and reserved than here, perhaps more of a Thinking type rather than a Feeling type. But as I changed a lot, he became a Battlemage. His primary proficiency is melee combat, his secondary fire-elemental magic. As showcased with him on Incitatus and Asterion. Which also bring me to his personality. Finalized he is very emotional and sometimes acts unreasonable because of that. He is wearing armor, though casually his attire would be comparable to Aldric and Leofwine.
His home of "Kärmave" is a pun as it combines altered versions of the words for Love and Stomach from Denmark. As his species is named gulo gulo, which means glutton, more of a joke than with the other two.

Khaba, as the quasi foreigner, is an Egyptian fruitbat... since this world lacks Egypt of course he is actually from a place called Altradia. The name of that is bascially a combination from Latin words adding into "Sandsun" (I think). His personality is mostly reserved due to him being basically born a slave, but as he now has his freedom... he starts to express himself more and shows a playful and mischievous nature as well. His name means "shade" in the Old Egyptian language after what I could find out.
His Master Incitatus' name is a reference to a horse that belonged to Imperator Augusti Caesar (or emperor) Caligula, who made his horse consul to play a prank on the Senat... needless to say Caligula died early and was dishonored later on. Asterion on the other hand is a reference to the culture and mythology of Crete. He got his name from King Asterion, who adopted the Sons of Zeus and Europa. One of those sons was Minos, who later would inherit the throne and... would have his own wife cheating on him with a bull... which leads to the Minotaur... who despite having the head of a herbivore would eat meat only. Yeah, I don't get that either.

And lastly the characters that are only slightly mentioned at the end.... all random Latin names. What are they all up to? Well, that might be up for another chapter.

Your first chapter of Fatal Radiance is great! I enjoyed reading how the four protagonists meet each other, especially with Vidar getting his revenge on Incitatus. Your description was also great to read and I like that the names are from some of the older languages such as Egyptian, Greek and Latin.
